CORNWELL, Sidney W.

No.T/92917, Corporal, Sydney Walter CORNWELL
Aged 25

57th Infantry Brigade Company, Royal Army Service Corps
Died on Wednesday, 18th August 1943

Sidney Cornwell was born in Isleham in 1918 (Newmarket Q2-1918 3B:712) son of Lewis and Susan Elizabeth CORNWELL (née AUDUS). He was Sidney in civilian records, Sydney in military records

In 1939 his family was in Sun Street, Isleham. Father [6-12-1881] market gardener/farmer; mother [25-7-1887] brother Benjamin Charles [3-1-1912] farm labourer/horseman; brother Hedley K [28-11-1913] farm labourer/gardener and sister Audrey R [8-5-1929]

He married Bertha Beatrice JERMEY in 1941 (Norwich Outer Q3-1941 4B:287) later of Tilney All Saints, Norfolk.

Being in a supply unit there was little chance of discovering where or how exactly Sydney died. Even finding the whereabouts of 57th Brigade has proved impossible. The fighting in North Africa had ended some months earlier. One report in the Bury Free Press recorded that he had died after being in an accident, the other, seen below, adds a little to the story.

Sydney Cornwell is buried in Medjez-el-Bab War Cemetery, Tunisia - grave 7:B:5
